Space-time variation of the fine-structure constant and evolution of isotope abundances

چکیده
At present several groups are analyzing astrophysical data in a search for the time variation of the finestructure constant a. Here we discuss how to exclude systematic effects caused by changes in the isotope abundances during the evolution of the universe. We suggest using particular combinations of the transition frequencies of O II, Al II, Al III, Si II, and Mn II as anchors, which are insensitive to a variation and to changes in isotope abundances. These anchors can be used to determine the cosmological redshift. Then, one can use other combinations of frequencies as probes for the time variation of a and another set as probes for the isotopic abundances. In this way it is possible to eliminate one source of systematic errors in the search for a variation and get more information about evolution of the isotopes. On the level of accuracy that has already been reached in the search for a variation it is possible to see ,10% changes in isotope abundances of Si and Ni.

متن کاملDetermination of 137Ba Isotope Abundances in Water Samples by Inductively Coupled Plasma-optical Emission Spectrometry Combined with Least-squares Support Vector Machine Regression
A simple and rapid method for the determination of 137Ba isotope abundances in water samples by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) coupled with least-squares support vector machine regression (LS-SVM) is reported. By evaluation of emission lines of barium, it was found that the emission line at 493.408 nm provides the best results for the determination...
متن کاملThe Fine-structure Constant as a Probe of Chemical Evolution and AGB Nucleosynthesis in Damped Lyman-α Systems
UMN-TH-2302/04 TPI-MINN-04/13 astro-ph/0404257 April 2004 Evidence from a large sample of quasar absorption-line spectra in damped Lyman-α systems has suggested a possible time variation of the fine structure constant α. The most statistically significant portion of this sample involves the comparison of Mg and Fe wavelength shifts using the many-multiplet (MM) method. However, the sensitivity ...
متن کاملIsotope shift calculations in Ti II
We present an accurate ab initio method of calculating transition energies and isotope shifts in the 3d-transition metals. It extends previous work that combines the configuration-interaction calculation with many-body perturbation theory by including the effective three-body interaction and modification of the energy denominator. We show that these effects are of importance in Ti II. The need ...
متن کاملA pr 2 00 6 Acceleration from M theory and Fine - tuning
The compactification of M theory with time dependent hyperbolic internal space gives an effective scalar field with exponential potential which provides a transient acceleration in Einstein frame in four dimensions. Ordinary matter and radiation are present in addition to the scalar field coming from compactification. We find that we have to fine-tune the initial conditions of the scalar field ...
